The inauguration and the transfer to the new spaces represent a very important stage for the improvement of the quality of newborn care at HAN, since the hospitals receives on average 3,000 births a year.
The new department is located within the HAN mother and child Center. The Center was created in 2013 by the Pro Africa Foundation that works in Ngozi since 2000, with the aim of implementing a training and assistance project to improve maternal and child care through the reorganization of the most neglected departments. Since 2014 Chiesi Foundation collaborates in this project, through the sharing of training materials for the improvement of newborn care and donations aimed at the completion of the Unit and the layout of the department with medical equipment appropriate to the context and local staff.
The new Neonatal Unit covers a large area dedicated to newborn care, consisting of 2 neonatal intensive care rooms, 1 KMC room for the practice of the Kangaroo method (KMC) in the ward, one isolation room for the most critical cases, 2 inpatient rooms, meeting rooms for medical and nursing staff. Furthermore, rooms for the sanitation of materials, a warehouse and adequate toilets have been set up, in order to allow mothers and staff to maintain a higher level of hygiene and infection control.
The new department has been designed to be a model of Neonatology suitable for low-resource countries. The structure, in fact, was conceived by Prof. Ezio Maria Padovani, neonatologist and professor of the University of Verona, on the basis of the international organizational and layout standards, as well as realized with the use of local materials and adequate to the context precautions. The inaugural ceremony took place in the presence of the major local institutional authorities.
