The 2011 winner of the Maurizio Vignola Award is Doctor Michael Kormann.

The paper that brought him the prize, Expression of therapeutic proteins after delivery of chemically modified mRNA in mice, was published in Nature Biotechnology earlier this year.

The paper describes a wholly new strategy for gene therapy in respiratory disease, using modified mRNA as the therapeutic agent.
