World Prematurity Day
Chiesi Foundation is wearing violet for the world prematurity day, on November 17. An important day where Institutions, organizations and families come together to increase awareness on prematurity and its prevention.
Preterm is defined as babies born alive before 37 weeks of pregnancy are completed. The WHO – World Health Organization - consider preterm birth as the first reason for neonatal mortality and the second one for infant mortality. As reported in “The Global Action Report on Preterm Birth” published by the WHO, every year in the world around 1.5 million, more than 1 in 10 babies, are born preterm. Preterm birth rates are increasing in almost all countries with reliable data.
Prematurity is a problem that effect every country in the world, but over 60% occur in Africa and South Asia. Furthermore there is a dramatic survival gap for premature babies depending on where they are born. For example, over 90% of extremely preterm babies (
Chiesi foundation is committed to fill this gap through the implementation of NEST - Neonatal Essential Survival technology – project. The Project aims at reducing neonatal mortality rate by improving the quality of neonatal care in countries with limited resources, with specific attention to premature, sick, unwell and small for gestational age babies. Chiesi Foundation is implementing is project through appropriate technologies, organized and equipped structures, trained doctors and neonatal nurses and support for the families during this difficult moment. We are speaking about simple but effective practices in order to save the life of many newborns, as the Kangaroo mother care (KMC). The KMC is a practice that provide continuous skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby. A method that has been shown to decrease mortality in preterm and low birth weight infants. Prevention is also crucial, education and empowerment of young women and mother is essential in order to protect their health and the health of their babies.
A very important day for us. A day that see Chiesi Foundation at the front line to confirm is commitment at the global and local level in order to find practical solution to decrease the issue of preterm birth.
